The "A" Word - Asbestos
Asbestos is a fibrous mineral used commonly in many types
of building materials in the 1940s to 1970s. It is not poisonous and does
not produce odours but is dangerous and may cause lung disease when the tiny
fibres are inhaled. Fibres can be released into the air only by disturbance
- poor removal methods, physical damage and abrasion. Unfortunately, it is
also easily disturbed by normal activities such as use of a fan and
renovation work. Asbestos is commonly found in a variety of home building
products such as:
Drywall joint filler and plaster
Hardwood underlay
Older style cushion flooring
Vinyl tiles and their adhesives
Furnace, pipe and duct insulation
Vermiculite insulation
